Mainly it is about the wildlife whose existence around our home follows a somewhat predictable pattern from year to year but still manages to be full of surprises with no outcome  guaranteed. Since the first sighting of Flying squirrels in 1993, we have been fascinated by the variety of the wildlife to be observed and studied right here on our half acre. I have chronicled some of that activity for the last few years in a number of different formats. This year the schema will be simply a page or multiple pages per month. Follow the adventure by selecting each month from the menu.

February 2008

A leap year February and a cold one for sure. Wildlife , snow, and even a total eclipse of the Moon. Wow.

The resident Mockingbird seems almost tame and this single Mocker seems to be a fixture at the feeders about this time every year. Usually let's me get fairly close for the almost posed pictures.

Finches really attack the thistle this time of the year . Here a Goldfinch on the feeder

A favorite resting place for this Gray Squirrel . Spends many hours sitting atop this bird house.

The deer are frequenting the yard much more in the last year or so. Think it is due to the declining area available to them as new home construction continues at an amazing pace

The February 20 Lunar Eclipse. A very cold night but I just had to video  the event. Rewarded with an Owl duet on the tape which was totally unexpected.

The February 20, 2008 Lunar Eclipse was spectacular in itself. An unexpected treat, was the vocal accompaniment  by a Hoot Owl duo seemingly hooting at the moon from the dark and cold winter bare trees. This video is the Lunar Eclipse Hootnanny.
